From a high school dropout to one of the most successful poker players of all time, the story of Daniel Negreanu is a truly fascinating one.
Originally born in Canada to Romanian parents, he decided to drop out of high school when he was only a few credits short of graduating. He played in various poker tournaments and illegal games throughout Toronto for several years. Additionally, he dated future professional poker player Evelyn Ng. At the age of 21, Negreanu decided it was time to head to Las Vegas. Unfortunately, his first stay in Las Vegas proved to be extremely unsuccessful, and he eventually had to go back to Toronto.
After spending time in Toronto to rebuild his bankroll, Negreanu hit it big in 1997 by not only winning two events at the World Poker Finals worth a combined $133,600, but also being named the best all-around player of the entire tournament. A year later, he became the youngest person to win a World Series of Poker event.
Since his initial successes,
Daniel Negreanu has only continued to improve. Over the last ten years, he has won two World Poker Tour events, two additional World Series of Poker events and has appeared at eleven final tables. He has also been named player of the year for the WSOP and WPT. The only major accomplishment to elude him is the holy grail of professional poker players: winning the World Series of Poker's Main Event.
In total, Daniel Negreanu has won a staggering $9,900,000 from his tournament play. This places him fourth on the list of professional poker players with the highest all-time tournament winnings, which is extremely impressive for a high school dropout that is only in his mid-thirties!
