November 20, 2008: A lot of people have wondered what type of person it takes to be a money making, online poker player. The truth of the matter is that it takes an informed person. With an online industry that generates more than $80 billion in revenue each year, anyone that has the patience to master the art of poker can take their piece of the pie.
The first rule of online poker is to have the right tools. Make sure that you are set up for success before you sign-up. That means signing up for rakeback. What is rake and how do we get it back? Rake is the small percentage of money taken from the pot of each hand before the winner claims the remains. This is how the site makes money. Through affiliate partnerships, some sites are able to offer a percentage of that money back to the players that generated it (players that were involved in the hand). Why does the poker site allow this? Simple. The poker site is advertised and aggressively marketed by these affiliate sites, which of course, produces more players. More players = more rake = more revenue. Offering a percentage of that rake back to the players that sign up through an affiliate is where the term “rakeback” was spawned.
Now let’s do the math. You are serious about playing poker. You have prepared yourself with literature, and online poker tools. You have studied, you have practiced and now it is time to put your money where your knowledge is. You have a choice to make. You can A) Sign up directly with the site and if you win $655.93 in 762 hands, with $51.50 in rake, you feel pretty good and if you lose $655.93 in 762, with $51.50 in rake, you stay persistent and try again, or B) You sign-up through a rakeback affiliate and with either of those figures you can add $15.45(30% of your rake paid back to you) to your winnings (or deduct it from your losses). This results in a winning session of $671.38 or a losing session of $640.48. I am sure that you are seeing where this is going. You are making money while you play, and as your skills strengthen, that 30% has the potential to be thousands of dollars. You do the math, and make a decision. For a serious poker player, this net gain speaks for itself. No poker player should be without it.
No matter if you are looking to create supplemental income, earn serious cash, or play as a hobby, isn’t the more lucrative option always the best?
