Betting on horses can be intimidating for betters new to the sport. While there is a lot to learn, consider a few of the basic factors in racing and you will be picking winning horses in no time.

Betting systems can become complicated and discourage those new to the track from pursuing horse racing betting seriously. But expert knowledge and years of experience is not necessary to start winning bets. As you are starting out, look at some of the basic betting considerations for each horse race.

How Long is the Race?
The length of the race is the first important consideration in creating your own betting system. Some horses demonstrate the fortitude and power needed to run and win a race of a mile or longer. Others are sprinters and show great speed in a short race, but quickly fall behind in a longer race.

How Many Horses Are Running in the Race?
Next, consider how many horses are running in the race as well as the post position of your horse. While horses on the rail have a slight advantage, this does not by any means indicate that horses on the outside can't win. A large field makes it more difficult to choose a winning horse and unexpected problems may come up such as interference at the starting gate or getting boxed in during the race and the jockey may be unable to move around the leading horses.

What Kind of Track is the Race On?
Is the race run on a dirt track or on a turf track? Some turf tracks require the horses to cross a section of dirt which can cause problems for some horses, especially young horses who have less experience. Also consider the condition of the track. Some tracks are flat while others may have a slight up or downhill grade. Also consider if the track is firm or soft and if it is dry or wet.

What Are the Odds?
The betting odds provide an indication of the horses chances of winning. The favorite is the horse with the lowest odds and is usually the horse that experts think have the best chance of winning. Keep in mind that the favorite does not always win the race and betting on a good horse with slightly longer odds will make you a lot more money if you win.
